A 3D World In TouchDesigner

This is a proposal for Mutek Japan - TouchDesigner showcase.

TouchDesigner is easily my favourite software to create functional prototypes and experiences for what I believe will be our next collective wave: interactive spatial interfaces.

However, 3D scenes can be very time consuming to put together, partially because the important parameters are not accessible from the viewport, the way they are in other softwares.

To this end, I created this tool to help myself, and other TouchDesigner users to explore and manipulate 3D scenes with ease.

Features

  • Interactive camera navigation through WASD, orbital navigation, or manual camera placement.
  • Ray-cast mouse inspector for interactive model adjustment, placement and contextual menus.
  • Scene explorers/listers for geometry, lights, cameras, and materials that give quick access to parameters, network exploring and parameter toggles.
  • Build parameter sliders and automate animation through intuitive python-based menu creation.
  • Create and save scene objects that save and load object, light, and preset parameters.
  • Material manager and one-click material application.

These features in combination give an entirely different experience of building a 3D scene in TD. The effect of which makes scenes, parameters and camera angles intuitive and explorable.

My belief is that this system could be a foundation for the community to build a component-based 3D creation environment.
