What is semiosis?

Semiosis is the process by which something functions as a sign. A sign concerns an object and generates an interpretant: an understanding, effect, or further sign.

What indexicality adds

Indexicality binds semiosis to an actual situation, but the field also distinguishes a material instance from the conceptual structures through which it is understood. A small physical token can activate a much larger conceptual “ghost.”
